TYPO3 version 12 LTS is here! Many enhancements, new functions and modern technologies under the bonnet make this version another very worthwhile TYPO3 release. As a Long-Term Support (LTS) release, this version will be maintained by the TYPO3 community for at least three years. In the following, we would like to show a few of the highlights of the new functions that are most relevant for users and editors.
Operating multiple applications, each focussed on a specific aspect of the business process, is commonplace in many areas today. Different systems must be able to exchange data in a secure and standardised way. This requires secure system interfaces that follow a standardised protocol.
Webhooks are a frequently used concept to achieve precisely this. TYPO3 v12 LTS offers solutions for setting up inbound and outbound webhooks. External systems can send requests to TYPO3 "from the outside" to trigger defined actions and responses. In addition, a new backend module enables the configuration of incoming webhooks as "reactions". These functions facilitate the integration of TYPO3 into a wide variety of system environments.
A typical real-world example of this function is to notify external systems about changes in TYPO3. The other system and TYPO3 remain autonomous and independent of each other, but are synchronised. Outgoing webhooks can inform external systems about events in real time and trigger follow-up actions. The practical use cases for inbound and outbound webhooks are endless. For example, if an order is received in an e-commerce application in TYPO3, external accounting systems outside of TYPO3 can be informed, which then create an invoice, for example.
The page editor module has been simplified and optimised for better usability. File management has also been made more accessible with a new tile view and drag-and-drop functions. In addition, search results appear as you type to help you find the needle in the haystack faster. This new so-called live search can be opened at any time in TYPO3 using the key combination Ctrl+K or Cmd+K. In addition, the new CKEditor text editor offers new functions that increase productivity in text creation and editing.
TYPO3's built-in multilingual capabilities allow integrators and developers to easily fulfil complex global content requirements.
You can now set up a new language in no time. TYPO3 v12 LTS offers configuration presets that allow you to create a new website language with just one click. The CMS has also been upgraded in this aspect. For languages such as Arabic, the user interface can now display texts from right to left.
A new country interface has also been added to TYPO3 v12 LTS, allowing developers to retrieve localised country names and associated data such as standardised ISO codes, flag display and more. Creating country lists and determining flags and languages has never been easier. For example, a localised country list can now be easily inserted into a drop-down field in a contact form.
Benni Mack, TYPO3 Core Leader, points out: "Security and stability are top priorities for TYPO3." This attitude is crucial for an enterprise-level content management system like TYPO3. In TYPO3 v12 LTS, we have raised the bar and implemented several modern techniques to increase the security of the system.
For example, with the introduction of Content Security Policies (CSP) in TYPO3, we are addressing security vulnerabilities that often occur due to inadequate coding of user-provided content. This additional layer of security aims to recognise and mitigate certain types of attack such as cross-site scripting (XSS) and data injection.
A new backend module Admin Tools ➜ Content Security Policy allows potential CSP violations in the frontend and backend to be checked and offers suggestions on how to fix the problem.
These are just some of the many new features in this new version. All other changes can of course be found in the detailed release article on typo3.org.
We have already updated our own website to TYPO3 12. In the last few weeks in particular, many popular extension modules have been released with a new version for TYPO3 12, which means that in most cases there is no longer a technical obstacle to updating.
