Accessibility on your website - Accessibility Improvement Act (BFSG)
Mandatory accessibility will also be mandatory for certain websites and web stores in the private sector from June 2025. What is behind this and what does it mean in concrete terms?
Based on an EU directive to improve the accessibility of consumer products and services, the Accessibility Improvement Act (Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz, BFSG) was passed in 2021. This law obliges operators of online stores to implement various measures from June 2025. Among other things, the aim of the law is to design online stores in such a way that they can also be used by people with disabilities without barriers.
The law aims to oblige manufacturers of products and service providers to design their offerings in such a way that they can also be used by people with disabilities without additional difficulties or assistance. It defines general requirements for accessibility and includes specific requirements for product labeling, market surveillance, administrative procedures and fines.
What does this mean for my website or webshop?
What types of websites does this law apply to?
Under what conditions are you not affected by the obligation?
How can you test and improve accessibility on your own website?
What accessibility standards must be met?
What happens if a website operator does not comply with the law?
We asked ourselves these and other questions at first. Thank goodness we know Dr. Bahr, a very good lawyer for new media law and data protection law, among other things. With his specialized law firm, he has been advising his clients for more than 20 years. We met online for a casual conversation between lawyer and web developer to find some answers to these and other questions. We are making this (German) conversation available to you here as a kind of podcast if you are interested in a few insights into the law and some aspects of implementation that you can simply listen to on the side. You can also download the podcast here.
We will be happy to advise you on the implementation of accessibility in your website or web store, provide information on auditing options and, of course, implement technical measures directly. We have already implemented low-barrier or barrier-free accessibility for many websites and web stores and can show you references with examples during the consultation. And if you already use the TYPO3 CMS as the basis for your website, for example, you already have an excellent technical basis for implementing accessibility.
